Introduction to IPL
Posted on by AdminIPL, stands for intense pulse light. A technology used by both cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments. It is best known for its Photo rejuvenation treatments, caused by sun damage, age spots and vascular lesions. Using a broad band spectrum pulse of light, the energy travels through a filter ranging from 400-1200 nm (nanometeres, that’s laser talk). The filter, depending on which one is chosen for your skin type and condition, selectively filters out other wavelengths. That wavelength will then target the specific structure in the skin, heats them up and is then reabsorbed by the body. When treating browns for example, the selected filter will find the target (melanin), darken the brown spots and within the next few hours to the up coming days the browns will become darker (we call them coffee grounds) and through natural exfoliation of the body, the spots will slough off. Leaving behind a smoother, brighter and lighter skin tone. With any laser treatment there is some “downtime”. When it comes to skin there are the three stages of beauty before we get to our end point. The “no pain no gain” (well, little discomfort with lots to gain) stage, the ugly stage (redness, inflammation, peeling, etc.) and then the “reveal” stage (luminosity and glow). Maintenance is key to all beauty longevity. You’ve invested time and money for these treatments so make sure you protect your investment. We mean that literally, commit to a good SPF and wear it all day everyday. Follow a good skincare regimen filled with antioxidants and growth factors. Keep those melanocytes at bay and keep that collagen coming! Results are typically seen by the second IPL treatment and book in touch ups once to twice a year. Get to the lightness you want and maintain, maintain, maintain!
